I ran a dojo for years.
Filled every class. Turned people away at the door. Built something people drove across the city for. And hit a ceiling that more marketing, better scheduling, and longer hours could not move.

I also spent 24 years managing multiple locations in a corporate structure. Overseeing operations, each with $5 to $8 million budgets, multiple sites, and the kind of responsibility that looks like security until the day it does not. I was laid off in 2025 during a workforce reduction and geographic consolidation. Strong performance. Strong record. Gone anyway. Because the structure decided, not the performance.
Both of those experiences taught me the same thing. The ceiling is always structural. Whether it is the room you teach in or the organization you serve, the structure determines the outcome. Not the effort. Not the credentials. Not how much you care.
